The book started out describing how Darrow’s world is. Darrow lives on Mars and believes him and his fellow reds are working to prepare this world for the other weaker colors. The colors are basically levels of the society, red being the lowest gold being the highest.

 

Darrow is what is called a helldiver. A very important role of the reds. He is the youngest their has ever been. To sum up what they do I would say they work below to help above. The red divisions work for a prize called the Laurel. It contains food, services, and other things that all the other divisions want. Darrow believes his division will get it this time because of his outstanding work, and so does everyone else. His wife Eo doubts it and was right. The gamma division always wins. It’s like the governments way of showing they are in control. Later that night Eo surprises Darrow by through a broken pipe to a garden. For the first time he see’s grass, butterflies and the sun. Eo tell him how she thinks the government is lying to them about everything. Darrow denies it because he is afraid, his father was publicly executed singing the forbidden song and dancing the forbidden dance. When they were leaving they were caught. They were to be beat in public. During her beating, Eo began to sing the forbidden song. The monitors that play videos in the square were recording her. All colors could hear her. Her beating stopped, now she was to be hung. The loved ones of the person getting hanged always get the “honer” of pulling their feet down because of the gravity. Knowing what he was getting himself into Darrow toke Eo down in the middle of the night, went back to the garden and buried her their. When walking back he encountered his uncle Dan, they’ve never been close and constantly bud heads. All he could do was have a drink with Darrow, after all he was his brothers son. The next day Darrow was hung.
